The Future is Great!

Diary entry, September 22, 2030:

On my way today to get my monthly anti depressants, our bus ran over a homeless person. It’s ok though because he looked like one of those neo-racist I heard about on the news. Actually, as I write this now, I don’t know if he’s dead or not. I’m excited, any minute now, I will be getting a letter telling me if my social credit is high enough to attend the high school my friends are going to. I’ve been double-checking all of my social media to make sure I’m not following anyone who has said anything that could lower it by association.

I haven’t written down anything in the diary in a while, but I MADE IT INTO THE HIGH SCHOOL. All of my friends except one did. I saw them in front of the school the other day screaming, “I want my in! I take it back, I deleted it. Please!!!”. I figured it must’ve been an issue with something they said online, I've been seeing that more and more lately. Everyone knows you have to watch what you say online, digital footprint and everything. It’s hard to always be on the right side of an argument, as sides seems to flip all the time, most people learn to give up keeping track of politics at an early age. There are a few things you need to make sure everyone knows you support, but everything else is too risky.

Today was my birthday, most of my friends were able to attend my party, even mom and dad came they still don’t understand VR that much, but most events are done remotely. I dressed myself in a two-piece suit that would have been very pricey in the real world, but only put me back a few credits in the VR-verse. I don’t think I’m inviting Kevin to my next party, he showed up as a small avatar and kept walking underneath all the girls skirts as a joke. Not funny. The drone dropped off all my presents on time, so everyone could see me open them on their screens. I got a new headset and a pair of Technicolor glasses. I am so excited to see the world with color, the ads on TV made everything through the glasses look so vibrant! Don’t get me wrong, I love the sleek look of all white and beige, but color is making a comeback. It’s so retro.

Diary entry, March 10, 2031:

I finished the new season of Marvel The Musical. I didn’t really like what they did with it. I’d give it an 8/10, at least it was better than season 4. The post credit scene hinted at Supreme Leader Shmungus, he’s not from the comics, it should be exciting to see what happens! He seemed super powerful and had such a strong singing voice. He even had great dance moves that I recognized from a new meme online. That was awesome, I have to admit. Oh! Also, I saw a trailer for The Shining Reboot Netflix Original Series! Now that is exciting, I saw they cast Timothée Chalamet to star as Jack, I can’t wait to see how it turns out. I couldn’t tell, but I think that The Rock and Kevin Hart had a cameo. I know that will be a great movie!

They came to our pod today! I had to tell them. I didn’t know they were going to take mom and dad away! They were saying things with their friends, I didn’t know what else to do. They were saying nasty things to each other and about The State. All my teachers said if I heard stuff like that, to run into my closet and call the police right away. Now I am writing this on a bus, they said I did the right thing. They are going to give me a bunch of credits for my VR character and a special badge I can show my friends. When mom and dad get back, they are going to be so proud.

Diary entry, April 7, 2031

Dad hasn’t come back yet. But mom came back today. I knew it would only be about a week of schooling, I heard in the past that if you crashed your car you had to get re-educated on how to drive. I guess that’s what they helped my mom do. It’s crazy to think they actually let people DRIVE, haha. She is a lot quieter now, and she never has friends over. A lot of my friends tried the same thing on their parents, but I guess their parents didn’t really need to take classes because they never got badges.
